PostHog vs Sentry: Error Tracking, Session Replay and Product Analytics
Prices and facts checked on vendor pages on Nov 8, 2026.
PostHog and Sentry overlap on error tracking and session replay, but they start from different jobs. PostHog is a product analytics platform with replay, feature flags, experiments, surveys and error tracking bundled under one monthly free tier. Sentry is an application monitoring product built around errors and tracing, with replays, logs, profiling and an AI debugging agent attached. Sazabi wrote this page from each vendor's published pricing and docs, checked on 2026-11-08, and makes no performance claims about either.
The Short Answer
Pick PostHog if you want product analytics, replay, flags and error tracking from one vendor and one bill, and your main question is how users behave. Pick Sentry if application errors and tracing drive your work, and you want its AI debugging agent. Nothing stops you from running both, because the overlap is in the middle and the edges differ.
PostHog vs Sentry at a Glance
How PostHog Charges
PostHog's pricing page has two tiers: a free plan and pay-as-you-go. Both have the same monthly free allowance, and pay-as-you-go lifts the project count and retention. There is no seat fee, and most products have their own billing limit. Analytics gives the first 1M events free, then $0.000198 per identified event or $0.00005 per anonymous event. Error tracking is billed per ingested $exception event: the first 100K are free, then $0.00037 up to 325K, $0.00014 up to 10M, and $0.000115 beyond. Web session recordings are free for the first 5,000, then $0.0050 each, falling to $0.0015 above 500K. Mobile recordings start with 2,500 free. All of these are list prices checked on Nov 8, 2026.
How Sentry Charges
Sentry's pricing page lists a free Developer plan for one user, Team at $26 per month and Business at $80 per month when billed annually. Team includes 50K errors, 5 GB of logs, 5M spans and 50 replays. Beyond that, the pricing documentation sets per-category pay-as-you-go rates. On Team, errors cost $0.0003625 each from 50K to 100K and $0.0002188 from 100K to 500K. Replays cost $0.00375 each from 50 to 5,000, then $0.003563 up to 100K. Logs beyond the included 5 GB are $0.50 per GB. Seer is a separate add-on at $40 per active contributor per month.
A Small Worked Example
Take 200,000 errors and 10,000 replays a month, with nothing else enabled, on Sentry Team at annual billing and pay-as-you-go rates. Replays and exceptions are not identical units, so read this as a rough guide.
That example leaves out product analytics, flags and surveys on the PostHog side and spans, logs and profiling on the Sentry side, which is exactly where the two products stop being substitutes.
Where the Products Differ
What each one is for. PostHog's replay documentation says every recording is enriched with the person, their properties and the feature flags they had, so you can move from a funnel drop-off or an exception to the session behind it. Sentry's Session Replay ties replays to errors, slow transactions and frustration signals like rage and dead clicks, and its getting-started guide says Sentry captures errors, logs, traces, replays, profiles and metrics, connected through distributed tracing.
Error workflow. PostHog's error tracking auto-captures exceptions, supports source map uploads, assigns issues to teammates and sends alerts to Slack, Discord, Teams or a webhook. Sentry routes alerts to Slack, Discord, PagerDuty and issue trackers such as Jira, Linear and GitHub Issues.
Volume control. PostHog bills on ingested exceptions, so suppression rules and the before_send hook cut cost before ingestion, and billing limits stop capture once you hit your cap. Sentry's plan includes advanced quota management on Business.
AI. Sentry's Seer analyzes issues as they arrive, can generate a pull request, can hand code generation to Claude Code, Cursor Cloud Agents or GitHub Copilot, and offers code review on GitHub and GitLab. PostHog AI is part of the platform, and its session replay lets you ask PostHog AI to find and summarize replays.
Self-hosting. PostHog's self-host docs describe an MIT-licensed Docker Compose deployment, say there is no support for self-hosted instances, and say all paid-plan features are Cloud-only. Sentry's licensing page states a goal of no feature difference between SaaS and self-hosted and licenses its web app under FSL-1.1-Apache-2.0, which converts to Apache-2.0 after two years.
When to Pick PostHog
- You want analytics, replay, feature flags, experiments and error tracking under one login.
- You prefer usage-only billing with no plan fee and hard billing limits per product.
- Product and growth teams will use the same tool as engineers.
- You are mostly instrumenting web and mobile client behavior.
When to Pick Sentry
- Tracing, logs and profiling matter next to errors, on both backend and frontend.
- You want Seer's issue analysis and pull request generation.
- You want cron and uptime monitors in the same product.
- Your questions are about engineering alerts and application behavior, not product metrics.
Where Sazabi Fits
Sazabi is AI-native observability and security, and neither PostHog nor Sentry has to go. Connect Sentry through its Internal Integration and issue, comment and alert events stream into Sazabi, or connect PostHog and its Data Pipeline forwards events as logs. The agent can also query each product through its MCP connector, investigates in Slack and opens issues. Sazabi's Browser and React Native SDKs capture errors, console output, network calls with trace context, user interactions, navigation and session identity from web and mobile apps. They do not capture Core Web Vitals or session replay. See Sazabi vs Sentry, Sazabi vs PostHog, the Sentry integration, the PostHog integration and Sazabi pricing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can PostHog replace Sentry for error tracking?
For many web and product teams, yes. PostHog Error Tracking captures exceptions, groups them into issues, uploads source maps, assigns issues and alerts to Slack, Discord, Teams or a webhook, and links exceptions to session replays. Sentry lists additional categories on its pricing page, such as spans, logs, profiling, cron and uptime monitors, so check which of those you rely on.
Is PostHog or Sentry cheaper for session replay?
PostHog includes 5,000 web recordings a month free, then $0.0050 per recording down to $0.0015 at volume. Sentry Team includes 50 replays, then pay-as-you-go from $0.00375 per replay. At 10,000 replays a month that is $25 on PostHog and about $36 on Sentry, before Sentry plan fees.
Can you self-host PostHog and Sentry?
Both have self-hosted options. PostHog offers an MIT-licensed Docker Compose deployment, with no support for self-hosted instances and paid-plan features available only on Cloud. Sentry states its web app is licensed under FSL-1.1-Apache-2.0 and offers a self-hosted product.
Do PostHog and Sentry both have AI debugging?
Yes. Sentry Seer runs Autofix on issues, can open pull requests and hands off to Claude Code, Cursor Cloud Agents or GitHub Copilot, priced at $40 per active contributor per month. PostHog AI is included in the free tier with 500 credits worth $5 each month, and replays can be searched and summarized with it.
